Sequencing at NC State

For anyone looking for some extra phage genome sequencing, the Genomics Sciences Laboratory at NC State is offering affordable Illumina runs again this year.  Jenn Schaff is the contact person there, and she says:

For those of you who didn't qualify for the free sequencing and still have extra phages to sequence before 2015 Spring ...

3' versus 5' overhangs in sequencing data

3' versus 5' overhangs in sequencing data

Recently, Eric Miller at NC State asked me about phage genome ends, and how a 3' overhang (sticky end) would look in an assembled genome compared to how a 5' overhang would look.  So I made a picture!  Hopefully it explains how you might diagnose either of these cases from sequencing reads, and how you ...

Free Sequencing: We need your DNA!

Well, not YOUR DNA...

If you've been phage hunting with a host that's IN the order Actinomycetales, but is NOT Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155, the Hatfull lab would like to sequence your phages' genomes free of charge.  So that means if you have DNA for phages found on Rhodococcus, Arthrobacter, Streptomyces ...

Count on me: Entering Institutional Data into seaphages.org

Hopefully, everyone in the SEA-PHAGES community is well into the swing of the new semester.  Now is a great time to start collecting some institution-specific data and aggregating it into program-wide numbers.  In the next couple of days, an email will be sent to SEA-PHAGES faculty inviting them to begin using seaphages.org and entering relevant ...

Sequencing Deadlines and Information

This year, all "official" (HHMI-supported) SEA-PHAGES sequencing will take place at the University of Pittsburgh.  Because schools on the quarter system begin their semesters later, we have two separate deadlines for DNA submission this year.

Deadline for Semester Schools

Please send your genomic DNA so that it arrives in Pittsburgh by November 21, 2014. ...

6th Annual Symposium, June 13-15 2014

We're just a week away from the 6th Annual SEA-PHAGES Symposium.  Held at HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia, this event brings together faculty and students from every active SEA-PHAGES school.  This year, we have over 200 participants with 18 student-presented talks, over 70 student-presented posters, and another dozen or so faculty and ...

SEA-PHAGES Podcast!

Sounds of the SEA

Wow, we just finished recording the first episode of the official SEA-PHAGES podcast, Sounds of the SEA.  We considered calling it TWiPH (This Week in Phage Hunting) to echo Vincent Racaniello's TWiV (Virology) but decided to go in a new direction.  Plus, it gave us the opportunity to make lots ...

The need for a new SEA-PHAGES website

The 2014 American Society of Microbiology General Meeting has just concluded, and the Science Education Alliance's Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program was one of two featured in the President's Forum (along with Yale and Jo Handlesman's Small World Inititative).

SEA-PHAGES Program Card

The SEA-PHAGES program began in 2008 as a collaboration between HHMI, the ...
