Greetings, all! Thanks, Dan, your directions were super helpful. I noticed this recent post from Beckie in which she says that her copy of DNA Master is not "error-free". We are having some issues here as well. I have two new research students who installed DNA Master on their Macs in the emulator last week. I downloaded DNA Master on my new laptop (a PC), also last week. All three of us are having difficulties. I am having a problem updating DNA Master on my PC. I get an error message when I try to do so. My students are having similar update problems. Another problem that my students are having is that they are not able to BLAST individual genes (for example, when a different start choice is made). I've attached a screenshot so that you can see the error message my students are getting. Interestingly, there are no DNA Master difficulties on any computers on which DNA Master was installed sometime in the past. DNA Master works just fine on my home computer, my office computer, my lab computer and on the computers in the computer lab at the college. The problems we are having appear to be associated with recently-installed versions of DNA Master. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! Kathleen |

Hi Debbie, Amazing how re-booting can solve so many problems! Yes, that worked. I'd also like to share the solution to another problem that this same student had when she first installed DNA Master in the Virtual Box. The DNA Master was in a very tiny window, and enlarging the size of the window just enlarged the white space. Here, in her own words, is how she solved the problem: "Open virtual box and click the “view” tab on the top right of the mac screen. Click “auto-resize guest display,” and expand/minimize the window size to whatever is desired, and the window should become full screen. Make sure to click anywhere inside the virtual box before going to the Mac drop down list so that the computer knows you want settings for virtual box." Thanks for the help! Kathleen |

Greetings, all! My summer research students and I are having great fun with DNA Master! Both of my students have Macs and we've navigated the challenge of installing Virtual Box and Windows 10. One of my students tried to use a Mac command (a command C to copy and paste) and her DNA Master screen suddenly presented with a very small font size! Enlarging the window just enlarged the amount of white space (screenshot attached below). Any way we can restore DNA Master to its former glory? Thanks, Kathleen |

Thanks, Debbie! And to Veronique, who sent me a very well-timed email! I figured it out five minutes after I posted (figures….) I forgot to click on the "Use PBI server for SEA PHAGES courses". Works like a charm now. Thanks for all of the help, especially at this hour of the evening! Be well, Kathleen |

Greetings, all! I have research students this summer and I have a new student who didn't have the phage course and I'd like to start her on an annotation project. I'm not able to perform the auto-annotation on our phage in DNA Master. My version of DNA Master is up to date (Version 5.23.6, Build 2700, 11 May 2021), I re-started DNA Master after updating, and I followed the directions on Dan's blog post. All I get are two tRNAs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kathleen |

Could you please tell me how my students would choose an application? I've attached another screen shot from the second student. I don't see how to either connect as a guest, as Chris suggested, or choose an application, as Debbie suggested. Sorry, I'm not a Mac user! |

Greetings, all, I have research students starting today. Because of cleaning protocols, they aren't able to move into the dorms until next week, so we are meeting for a week on Zoom. Fun! I thought we'd use our week of remote time to do some annotation work. We are trying to download DNA master. They both have Mac computers. They were able to download the Virtual Box, and then Windows 10. Now they are in Windows 10 and trying to download DNA Master. When they click on the link, they are brought to an ftp site. I looked at Chris's post above, but I don't see any way they can connect. I've attached a screenshot if that is helpful. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! Kathleen |

Greetings all! This looks like an old thread, but it seemed appropriate to post here as our phage also crashes when we run Starterator. Zolita crashes routinely at gene 74. I've attached a screenshot to illustrate what happens. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! |

Thanks for your suggestion about the profile, Chris! And I did see that all of the starterator genes were on line. But I wanted a full report so that I could upload it to PECAAN. And once I looked up how to upload the database, Starterator worked fine. Thanks again! |

Hello all! This looks like an old thread, but I'm having trouble with Starterator so this seems to be a good location to post. I'm trying to run Starterator on Skippy, and I selected "Whole Phameratated Phage" and was told that Skippy was not in the database. I know that there is a way to update the database, but I can't remember how, so I chose "Unphamerated Phage" instead and uploaded the FastA file. Starterator appeared to start, but then crashed and I was told to "Please try again" which I did, but it crashed again. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! |
