Hi Lee,
It would appear you are on the right track…. a small (ca. 100 residues?), basic (?) protein that binds and bends DNA. It could facilitate integration, like IHF, or excision. Does it form a new pham with proteins from other phages? Proteins similar to IHF, FIS, H-NS, HU…. etc. Not seen a similar protein, that I recall, in Paenibacillus larvae phages that we've sequenced.
Best,
Eric

Hi Vassie,
Normally we should have room for 8-10 students. We are a little late in announcing the program this first time around (award notice timing, etc.) so maybe 8 participants this summer. Thanks for asking and…. please help spread the word!
Best,
Eric

If you are an undergraduate science major who is interested in pursuing a career in STEM, there is an exciting new opportunity to develop your skills while studying the interface between microbes and bees. BeeMORE is a USDA-funded Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates who are interested in significantly advancing their research skills both in the field and in the laboratory.

Potential projects include:
  • Disease ecology of native pollinators
  • Discovering new yeasts from beehives for brewing beer
  • Metagenomic surveys of bees and hives
  • Elucidating the gut microbiome of honey bee queens

Logistics
  • Program runs from May 30th to August 3rd 2017 (9 weeks), and some accommodations for travel can be provided
  • Students will receive a $500 stipend per week ($4,500 total for the summer) PLUS free room and board at our Wolf Village Apartments
  • Successful applicants will be paired with faculty mentor programs to conduct their own research most amenable to their research interests and background
  • Activities will include presentations, group field trips, extension meetings, and the NC State Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium

Apply now!

Many thanks,
Eric

Thanks Dan. I was wondering if there was evidence of "crossing the divide", or if there were enough isolates and sequence information to address the divergence, etc.

I suspect the experts at Pitt know this, or there is a useful paper out there……

While the majority of mycobacteriophages are syphoviruses (non-contractile, flexible tails) there are contractile tailed myoviruses (or Syphoviridae, Myoviridae, if you prefer that).

- I am aware of the C cluster myoviruses. Are there more clusters of myoviridae among the mycobacteriophages?

- Is there a myoviridae phage that aligns most closely with a syphoviridae cluster and is thus an "odd one out", primarily due to its tail structure?

- Has anyone compared the tail proteins of the two morphotypes of mycobacterial phages? How about a comparison of the head-tail connectors? Portal proteins? Terminases?

- Finally, is there a lysogen containing a C cluster phage and does it contain a classical prophage integration?

All questions piqued by topics discussed at the recent (successful!) symposium that well may be answered somewhere!

David's death is very sad news; it upsets me deeply. David loved science and people. I laughed so many times with him. I can't imagine how much he will be missed by family, friends and colleagues, to whom I extend my sincere sympathy.

For "copy and paste" in DNA Master, we have at times found that while the key stroke commands don't work, the edit menu functions do work. A trivial contribution that might help!
