Virginia State University was founded in 1882 and is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions. VSU is a public historically black university or college (HBCU) with a student population of ~4,600. Across six colleges, VSU offers 31 undergraduate degree programs, 17 graduate degree programs, two doctoral degree programs, and seven certificate programs. The 231-acre campus is situated just 20 miles south of Richmond and 2 miles from VSU's 412-acre agriculture research facility.

Nneka Osiah holds an MS in Biology and is a dedicated STEM professional with a passion for fostering scientific inquiry and discovery in higher education. As an experienced educator, Nneka specializes in curriculum development, instructional design, and active learning methodologies, with a strong background in anatomy, physiology, and biology education. Committed to student success and continuous professional development, Nneka is currently aspiring to obtain a PhD in natural and/or biomedical sciences, aiming to further contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and education.

Dr. Beyer graduated from Cedar Crest College with a B.S. in Genetic Engineering, and obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.She began teaching in undergrad, which continued into her graduate studies. After completing her doctoral thesis on host-viral interactions, she began postdoctoral work on intracellular bacteria at Virginia Commonwealth University as an Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) fellow. During this time, she further developed her undergraduate teaching skills through the VCU Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) coursework and a teaching externship at nearby Virginia Union University. Upon completion of her postdoc, she began teaching as an instructor at Virginia State University, where she became an Assistant Professor in 2017 and taught through Spring 2024. Starting Fall 2024, Dr. Beyer will teach Biology at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, VA.
