School of Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FBIOYF) Vision and mission Established in 1970, the School of Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FBIOYF) is part of the Public University Rosario National University. It is a free institution and is co-governed. FBIOYF seeks to advance social, economic and environmental well-being through the transformative power of education. The institution is committed to community engagement and public responsibility, working under the highest quality standards. The four major interrelated missions are education, the generation of new knowledge, engagement with the community and technology transfer. To achieve this, we provide a large range of undergraduate and graduate programs; do research in basic and applied areas, offer specialized analytical services to the society and the industry; are members of two hospitals being in charge of a with a range of clinical diagnostic labs and community pharmacy; and produce medicines and drugs in our pilot drug production plant. Therefore, we aim at improving population's health, the development of the scientific-technological-productive culture, the improvement of the institutional and quality of life of citizens, respecting and favoring the care of the environment and the diversity of gender and culture. Courses information There are many different courses available to our students, distributed in undergraduate, specialization, master and doctorate programs. FBIOYF offers six different degrees in Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Food Science and Technology and Chemistry Teaching. Post-Graduate degrees include Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences. FBIOYF also offers more than 10 postgraduate degrees and more than 53 postgraduate courses mainly related to health, environment, biotechnology, chemistry and food. Main organization FBIOYF is institutionally organized in a matrix structure of 5 schools and 11 Departments which are based on 39 Academic Areas. This structure is complemented by numerous specialized service laboratories, which allows the development of very diverse groups and research topics as well as the construction of knowledge from practical experience and interdisciplinarity. Likewise, in association with our National Research Council (CONICET) FBIOYF holds six research institutes.

Microbiology

My scientific interests are related to biomedical issues. Indeed, my main motivation has always been to contribute to solve problems related to human health. As microorganisms have always fascinated me too, I combined my areas of interest to work in the field of medical microbiology. I have been working with human pathogens, in particular with A. baumannii, an important human pathogen. My work focuses on identifying and characterizing aspects that contribute to the success of A. baumannii as a pathogen in the clinical setting, being key for this purpose its ability to rapidly acquire resistance to antibiotics as well as certain physiological traits related to persistence in the environment. In fact, I worked for many years on mechanisms of resistance to last generation antibiotics, and also discovered the capability of these microorganisms to sense and respond to light, a feature considered previously to be restricted to phototrophs. The technical expertise I acquired during all these years allows me to perform genetic manipulations in A. baumannii and other microorganisms, as well as to dominate diverse molecular and cellular techniques. The formation of human resources capable of confronting the challenge that multidrug resistant microorganisms impose in the clinical setting is essential. In this context, I mentored doctoral (5) and undergraduate students (9), as well as health care professionals (2), and received and administered financial funding, which supported my research. Finally, I have been teaching general microbiology courses such as bacterial physiology and bacterial genetics for 22 years, where I had the chance to specialize and update permanently in most aspects related to bacterial physiology including perception and responses to environmental clues, key topics involved in the present project.

Microbiology

I am a researcher at the University of Rosario and CONICET, Argentina. After my doctoral work on acyl-CoA carboxylases from Streptomyces and Mycobacteria, I pursued postdoctoral training at Centre d'Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy, France, studying effector proteins involved on Salmonella pathogenesis. Presently my research focuses on primary metabolism of pathogens during the infection, including Salmonella, Acinetobacter, and lipid metabolism of Mycobacteria.

Adjunct professor

Department of Bioinformatics

I am a versatile researcher with expertise in microbiology, bioinformatics, and entrepreneurship. Currently, I hold a professorship in the "Bioinformatics Area" at the Biochemistry Faculty of the National University of Rosario. My work primarily focuses on developing and applying whole genome-scale tools to predict microbial behavior and identify exceptional strains, particularly plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. While our main focus is on agronomic applications, we also explore industrial and health-relevant strains. Recently, I co-founded the bioinformatics startup TAXON, which specializes in comparative genomics and genomic characterization. I am committed to advancing microbiology, promoting sustainable agriculture, and contributing to the scientific community. Collaboration plays a vital role in our success, and I actively seek opportunities to make a positive impact and foster innovation within the non-profit sector.
