Dr. Beyer graduated from Cedar Crest College with a B.S. in Genetic Engineering, and obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.She began teaching in undergrad, which continued into her graduate studies. After completing her doctoral thesis on host-viral interactions, she began postdoctoral work on intracellular bacteria at Virginia Commonwealth University as an Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) fellow. During this time, she further developed her undergraduate teaching skills through the VCU Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) coursework and a teaching externship at nearby Virginia Union University. Upon completion of her postdoc, she began teaching as an instructor at Virginia State University, where she became an Assistant Professor in 2017 and taught through Spring 2024.
