eNotebooks by LabArchives are used in the course as provided by the Biotechnology Program (accounts are about $15/student and are valid throughout matriculation at NC State). Dedicated lab laptops allow use with gloves only for continuous entry. Daily notes are submitted and individually read and approved by the TA, or directed to be corrected. Images from cell phones are uploaded. Saves time for all and is an efficient data management system. A separate shared Google Sheet is maintained to monitor the progress of phage isolation from different enrichments. Students often finish well before the 3 hour maximum time period.
Fall 2016 ▼
Start: Aug 18, 2016, End: Dec 01, 2016
NC State offers phage hunters as a one semester "Phage Discovery" course - phage isolation, genome sequencing and genome annotation - in one fall semester. One faculty member and one TA deliver the course through the NCSU Biotechnology Program. Primary literature is reviewed, oral presentations are made, and an optional opportunity to present at the spring Undergraduate Research Symposium is provided. And it's all fun!
