My understanding is UA is minimally radioactive but radioactive nonetheless. Are there any handling guidelines for first time users or if students should need anything beyond gloves when they work with it? |

jeremy Hi Jeremy, You are correct that UA is minimally radioactive, and is so because it is made from depleted uranium. For a 1% uranyl acetate solution (the stain we recommend), standard BSL1 PPE (gloves, lab coat, safety glasses) will suffice; this is true at many institutions and imaging facilities. The final say however has to come from your institution's safety office. Vic |

Dear all, Is there any specific brand of uranyl acetate that I should get? Just wondering. Electron Microscopy Sciences also sells 1,2 and 4% solutions, and wondering if these are OK to use for phage imaging. -Katsu |

Katsu, we used 1% with no problems. SEA-PHAGE now recommends using Uranyless Stain. You won't have to deal with institutional requirements for radioactive hazards/waste either. You can also send lysates out and they can stain them for you at the UMBC core |
