Portal and MuF-like

| posted 24 Apr, 2018 12:36
AK phages have an extra domain fused to their portal proteins. This domain is similar to the F gene of phage Mu, which is a protein involved in capsid morphogenesis.
This gene should be labeled "portal and MuF-like fusion protein"

Revised: Do not call any of the MuF-like minor capsid proteins for now. (6/16/21)

We found a gene labeled "portal and MuF-like fusion protein" that is not in the function list. There is only a portal protein on that list but it is not specified what these portal and MuF-like fusion proteins should be called. It is called the portal and MuF-like fusion protein in the Phage Maja and is coming up in NCBI exactly like that for two different hits. What should these be annotated as?

Amaya,
That is because I recently removed MuF from the function list because it does not describe a function. Originally we thought MuF was a minor capsid protein, but we have a bit of experimental evidence that it doesn't show up in the capsid. There are some papers about how rampant this gene (and its homologues) are found, but still haven't found ay good evidence of what it is.
If you have evidence of the portal, please call it.
I hope that helps,
debbie

Microbacterium phage BabyDaisy (EB) pham 67090 called both portal protein and MuF-like fusion protein as recently as 2021 see attached screenshot. Official function list says do not call Mu, just portal. Please advise.

Hi Amy,
We took Muf-like calls off of the official function list because it appears to not be a structural call and while is appears everywhere, we don't see a good indication of what it is doing. Please do not call it.
Best,
debbie
